For someone like me who moved to Postgresql from Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server, Stored procedure was most sought after feature in Postgres. There are many benefits of Stored procedure over function.

Starting Postgress 11, Postgres now supports creation and execution of stored procedure. As developers continue to unleash the power of stored procedure they will certainly be thankful to Postgres and Postgres community. On this post, we’ll see how to list all the created stored procedures in your database.

Just like functions, we can query the list of stored procedures from information_schema.routines view. Below is the query to view list of stored procedures.

SELECT
specific_catalog,
routine_schema,
routine_name
FROM
information_schema.routines
WHERE
routine_type='PROCEDURE';

First thing when I get new office calendar is to look at the holidays and see how they are aligned with Weekends. I search for holidays that are around weekends and immediately mark them. The reason being, I can plan for the trekking trips. I don’t need to really search about destinations, because we have so many places in Nepal that I know of and that one should reach in their lifetime. The problem for me however, is to choose among all those destinations. Considering the difficulty of the trekking route and from past experiences, I was strict on forming the group this time. Sanjog, Bigyan, Rajendra and Me. Sanjog cancelled his Tour The Lumbini plan, Bigyan was yet again willing to go around basecamps, and Rajendra gave up many of the things to join the plan.

Badimalika was late inclusion in our plan. I had heard it once somewhere in internet and we did a quick youtube about it. Sanjog insisted that we trek to Badimalika, Bigyan, however, was not sure about that. Ultimately though, we all concluded to go to Badimalika.

Day 1:

We took Nepal’s longest domestic flight (KTM-DHI), scheduled for 7:00 in the morning, got delayed and flew at 7:45. Weather wasn’t clear, we were above cloud for most of the time. When we landed at Dhangadhi Airport in a hour or so, It was totally different feeling and environment. Sun wasn’t that bright but temperature was very hot. As soon as we landed, Sanjog ran towards toilet, not that he works on toilet (wink), but his stomach wasn’t happy from couple of days. We didn’t want to go for lunch or anything until we buy Bus ticket for Bajura, so we took Auto-rickshaw from airport to Dhangadhi Bus-park. We were aware of the strike announced by different transport committees against government’s action against syndicate. We were few days ahead of transport committees’ 1-week long action strike. But, bus owners and local committees had already started the free queue system. There were no vehicles available at Dhangadhi airport that would go to Bajura. Some of the bus drivers, who were going up to Achham, suggested us that we take bus to Achham and take jeep and hospital ambulances next day from Achham, I wasn’t going after any of the ideas though. We didn’t want to make any decision on empty stomach, so we headed for a restaurant near Buspark. In the hotel, we had a contact with Bus-owner, whose bus was travelling to Bajura, but from Attariya. We booked ticket for four of us with 900 each. We still had some time after lunch, so we headed to Dhangadhi Park, and we played Ludo there.

Same Ludo Game, but at different place this time.

After spending an hour or two on Dhangadhi Park, we returned to Buspark to catch our bus. This bus was supposed to take us to Attariya only and another bus would pick us from there. We enjoyed Kafal and street food on Attariya. Bus, leaving for Bamka, was a narrow-body and uncomfortable one. Bigyan and me were on the sit side by Pole. It was so narrow that we had to do a poll dance every time getting on and off of the sit. We started our journey in night bus with just 4 strange faces, rest of the passengers were coming from family function in Tikapur and were returning their home back to Achham. Our journey to Bamka was uncomfortable yet, pleasant one.

Day 2:

I woke up around 5 a.m. where Bus was stopped and I thought we were already on Bamka Bazar. But, bus was there on Safebagar, Achham and I forgot what it was waiting for. We left from Safebagar to Bamka on same bus around 7 a.m., only to be dropped off on Buda Bazar. We waited for another bus that would take us up-to Bamka. This was a comfortable and Deluxe Bus coming from Kathmandu. There was no enough space to move inside bus, so we opted to enjoy rest of the trip on hoot in a narrow hilly road.

Getting off from bus on Bamka Bazar, Bajura

We finally reached Bamka bazar on 9:15 A.M. Because of dispute of locals, regular jeep from Bamka to KailashMandu were not available. To keep the hope of catching jeep alive, we crossed Budi Ganga river. We were told that we should wait at least an hour for jeep, so we decided to ascend towards Kailashmandu village on own foots. In trekking route, it’s never a pleasure to walk through the road. We saw jeep coming after 1 and half hour of ascending, and we took jeep for remainder of the road up to Kailashmandu. We were in regular phone contact with Man Bahadur Dai, who was in Achham for buying buffalo. In Kailashmandu, we asked for a lunch and chicken to be prepared on Man Bahadur Dai’s relative’s home. It took us more than two hours to have lunch and get ready to walk. Around 2:45 PM, we started our real trekking from Kailashmandu. We were off track right after we left Kailashmandu village. Thankfully, it was still a day and we managed to get to the main trail before dawn. We reached Nateshwori Temple, not far from the village, in 4:00 P.M. After some time of rest and visiting temple, we started to walk again. We were targeting to reach BishnuPani and stay in one of the huts or setup a tent there. All of the sudden, It started to get dark and started raining with heavy storms. Thankfully, there was one hut below the trail and we ran towards that hut. It was a narrow, built of stones, 2-story hut. On ground floor, there were some buffaloes and on the upper one there was a place for One old couple to stay. We asked if we could stay there for a night and share their food. The old man was kind enough to give us a shelter there.

We started chit-chat with old man. It was raining outside and getting cold on the evening. He was kind enough to help us with Ginger-Milk tea in that cold weather. After drinking tea, he prepared Sukka Roti with the help of bottle and plate. We were already happy with Roti only, but he also offered a sweet curd. I still remember that curd was far superior to Juju Dhau. We offered him and his wife chicken that we packed from Kailashmandu. In that narrow space, we still managed to play few Ludo games before laying down on our sleeping bags.

Day 3: Though we didn’t have a comfortable sleep, night wasn’t fully sleepless. I woke up on 4:30; it was a full moon night. There was no toilet or bathroom for a morning ritual. We managed to do it in old man’s field. While all of us were fresh, old man woke up and prepared tea for us. We were very happy and offered him some financial help. We gave that amount while leaving his hut 5:45 in the morning. We walked about an hour to reach small stream and fill our bottles with water. We tried to ascend as much as we can before the sun was above our head so, we didn’t take much break except one for having Sattu (Prepared with toasted ground barley grains, salt and other food) and water. About 12 in noon, we were already in alpine zone. Everyone else was so tired that they decided to take a nap at that point. The nap was supposed to be for 10 minutes but got extended for 30 minutes.

📷
Photo coming back soon

We were at the point where there were no trees except some rhododendron ones, we could hear bird’s twitter, see eagles and Danphe (Himalayan monal). Ahead of us were big mountains and we could’ve gone to any direction. We were guessing probably this mountain has Badimalika or that mountain has Badimalika, etc. Remember, there are no road signs on this trail, no tea shops, and no good source of water. We continued walking ahead of us. Our direction was mostly guided by plastic cover of Biscuit, Noodles and Gutkha. At some point, it would take 15/20 minutes of walk to see one of that and to confirm that we are heading in right track. Since there were no tea houses and nothing for lunch, our energy was on coming from Snicker and Sattu. Around 2 in the noon, we were already lethargic but we had very long way to go. We hadn’t seen or known for sure on which mountain do Badimalika lie. Rain caught us while we were ascending the uphill. It followed with big-big rain-storms heating our head. We had no choice as there was no tree or hut or any safe place that could prevent us from those rain-storms. After raining, it started to look dark. Since we weren’t sure on how far our destination lies, I decided to walk in one way and check if we could see the temple. If rain and rainstorm wasn’t enough, it also started to snow. It was very difficult to walk, but I walked about 40 minutes up, where there was no clear way but still there was this threadlike trail that we could walk. After not seeing anything clearly, I returned back to where guys were waiting. From that point we descended further which had taken us more than an hour to ascend. There was an old, stinky, and unmaintained small loafing shed on the bottom of the mountain where we decided to spend night. We collected some woods from nearby and used them to make our door along with the help of our sticks and plastic raincoats. We were not decided which way to head next morning. After few minutes of discussion, we decided that we will start next day as early as possible and ascend the same mountain that we returned from.

Day 4:

We needed to wake up and start our trekking as early as possible as this was our verdict day. We all got up around 4:00 A.M., did morning rituals, packed bags and started ascending stiff mountain before dawn. We were short off water, so I was tasked of collecting and carrying water. There was small amount of water in stream because of last night’s rain, I collected water in two of our bottles. Rajendra and Sanjog were leading the way while Bigyan was in medium pace. I was catching them with water bottles in bag and in two hands. As soon as we reached the point where I alone reached yesterday, it looked like there’s still a way to go; forget where though. Bigyan was already feeling high altitude and was barely walking. We took Oreo, and I was assigned a duty to walk with Bigyan; recalling that moment now, that was a penalty for me. I was so irritated by Bigyan’s inability to walk; he would walk slowly for 2 minutes but take 10 minutes of rest. I tried everything, pushing from behind, motivating from upfront, scolding, and what not. We were already in distance with Rajendra and Sanjog.

As we were climbing top, we were afraid of how to return through the same way. It’s easier to climb high as you don’t usually see what’s ahead of you. But, when you need to descend such a stiff mountain, you need to have a strong heart. More we climb, more snow was there. There wasn’t very clear trail at all though. If there was any, that was all covered by snow and rainstorms. Around 9:30 a.m. in the morning, we saw step stones. It was unbelievable at that height of 4,000+ meters to see step stones considering that there was no clear trail up to that point. Those step stone already gave us a vibe that we were nearing Badimalika temple. After 5/10 minutes of walk on step stone, we finally reached Badimalika temple before 10:00 in the morning. What a relief, what a happiness, and what an achievement considering we were almost about return without reaching there. We were all tired and it was a windy day. But, we visited around the temple, saw the beautiful landscapes all around. The landscape view was out of our imagination. The only problem though was to figure out which side was the Triveni. We kept on guessing, took photo, worshiped Badimalika Mai, asked for whatever everyone wanted, and had Shatu and Cashew. It was 1:30 when we started our walk for Triveni. We were told by Manbahadur dai that there’s a water tank in mountain near temple on the way to Triveni. We saw that water tank, but there was no way of reaching there. The only way to reach water tank was fully covered by snow and the snow was such that you’ll sleep off for sure and die. So, we didn’t risk going there.

This was the way to water tank. The ice covered area in far corner is the water tank.

After half an hour of walk downwards, we decided to collect water from snow. It was 2:00 in the noon, sun was bright and snow was melting making us easy to collect water. We drank icy water, filled in our bottles and made couple of Jeevn-Jals as well. Then again, we started walking but it was very difficult trail. The trail is pretty narrow just enough for one person to walk, there were some landslides, and to make things worse, all trail was covered by snow. We walked with 4 feet some. At some point I lost hope on me and on all of the boys as well. I was afraid someone will go down. Once you are down on that trail, there’s no way that you’ll be found dead or alive again.

We kept on pushing our legs, believed on sticks and believed on Badimalika and kept on walking. At some places, we were confused which side to take because there are no signs, nobody to ask and no house, hut, animals or anything on vision span. In same situation, cloud will cover you all and separate 4 of you from one other. The visibility was rarely a step ahead at some point. Yet, we turned out lucky, took right turn and were on the right track. It was getting cold now, there was no sign of Triveni, any river, or anything to be seen, so we also had to think about night. Luckily, we saw stone hut, and we rushed towards that. There was no body and no animals. But, it was near the small stream, was stronger than the one we stayed last night and was spacious as well. There were some firewoods as well. We were in mood of cooking noodles. So, covered a plate with mud, brought a water from stream and we boiled water on that. Turn by turn, each of us got one plate of hot water, mixed our noodle and had a semi-cooked food after 3 day. We rewarded ourselves for doing what appeared to be an insurmountable thing. It was wonderful stay on hut on this day. The cloud would fill up everything and will clear in a minute again. We were in island of land.

Day 5:

All of us had a pretty good and warm sleep. As usual, we woke up early, did morning rituals, packed our bags, sleeping bag and mat, filled up bottles with water and started walking. It was bitterly cold and sun hadn’t risen yet. We reached in Triveni, there are 3 creeks coming from different directions of the mountain and the water was ice-cold and we were hardly able to touch it. I went past the streams to check if we could see some villages, but it was only prairie that we could see. We spent about an hour around the triveni, worshiped at temple there, had our Satu and started our walk back to Badimalika temple. We were considering returning through some other route and checked if GPS was working properly. But, neither GPS was working properly, nor we had clear offline map, nor was there any direction mark. We could have taken a challenge but Bigyan was not feeling well and if we got lost for 2 days, we would be without food. So, we didn’t want to take that risk and took another risk of returning through that difficult mountain again. We decided to do Bigyan’s speed check. From one point, Rajendra and I walked non-stop for 20 minutes and asked Sanjog and Bigyan to follow us. It took Bigyan and Sanjog 55 minutes (35 more minutes) to walk the same distance. The day wasn’t clear, visibility was rarely up to your next step. But, some time nature would clear and show little glimpse of the Badimalika temple from far. In about 4 and half hours (Bigyan’s speed), we reached Badimalika temple from Triveni around 12:45 p.m. We didn’t spend much time their except stopping there for timelapse and some snacks. We started descending from Badimalika top around 2 p.m. As they did most of the time, Rajendra and Sanjog walked ahead and left me to walk in Bigayn’s slow pace. But, Bigyan was feeling good and was getting better at walking this time. We descended that huge mountain pretty fast. In 3 hours, around 5 p.m., we reached in a place called Dharma Chhinna and the squad took rest their for a while. A jungle starts from Dharmachhinna and it was getting dark as well. But, trail was pretty straight and wide enough to walk being carefree. We didn’t set ourselves a target and wanted to walk as long as we all are not tired or as long as there’s light. We further walked for 2.5 hours and reached a place called Motipani. While we were ascending to Badimalika 2 days ago, there was a man in the hut with his dog and lambs. We expected him to be there and had thought of staying there. Even though he wasn’t there, we decided to stay there in his hut which was full of bugs and fleas. We fired a wood, had our regular Satu I belive and slept there. We had a fear of Tiger or Beer attacking us while sleeping and as far as I remember everyone was semi-awake after 2 a.m. We got off on 5, did riturals, I did in the base of a tree. We decided to leave the biscuit and noodle we had on the same hut where we stayed so that the old man gets happy. We just hope he returned there in time. We were getting frequent call of Man Bahadur Dai and he was offering us to have lunch in his home. Which, we were also happy about. He sent his uncle to receive us on Kailashmandu who guided us until Man Bahadur Dai’s home. He and Bal Bahadur dai have a beautiful home in Kailashmandu with wonderful view of Bamka bazar and surrounding mountains and I think one of the best house in that area. Everyone rushed for charging mobile. We were offered a tea and we had it with biscuit. After few time, lunch was ready and it was awesome as hell with Dudh, Mohi, and Ghiu. Man dai was asking us to stay and was offering Local Bhale (look at the picture below for what we missed). But, we wanted to move on and travel other places. We descended from Kailashmandu to Bamka Bazar. The road was almost empty. The travel person’s strike was still on and there were very few vehicles available to travel.

We waited long on Bamka Bazar for Bus. While waiting, we had local chow-mien, Local Kakro and what not. Luckily, we got a bus to stand and two seats I believe around 4 pm. It was called for full strike the next day, so, bus was on full speed and dropped us next morning 5 am on Attariya.

Day 6:\

After getting off from Bus, we moved to the other side of the road on the way to Mahendranagar. There were some trucks coming but they were refusing to take us or they were not reaching Mahendranagar. Even though it was early morning, we were kissed here and there by mosquitoes. After a long wait, a gyp arrived with a poster of “PRESS” on it. We requested and they’re ready to lift us along with some 20 others in that small gyp. We were sitting there like a sack of cement is carried in truck. It was one of the riskiest travel of my life. Regardless, we reached Mahendranagar safely and took Rickshaw to take us up to Dodhara Chandni. We had many vegetable curries and foods in a restaurant in Dodhara chandni.

PowerShell: Working with large files performance comparison

Ever since I started using PowerShell (back in 2012) for automating boring tasks or automating complex tasks, I always thought PowerShell Command-lets provided in powershell were the best to use not only for the ease of use but also for the performance. I always thought PowerShell Cmdlet provide high performance than any other alternatives available. However, when I needed to work with large text files (we still have to work on text files and they are very large), I needed to wait for result longer than usual.

Before looking at the script and comparing the performance, let’s look at the requirement:

I needed to take around 10% of the lines from the file that had 260 Million lines and that was 22 GB large. To be precise, I needed to take 29,331,402 lines out of the 259 Million lines. As always, I used simple powershell script to do this. It took more than half an hour and I just cancelled the script in between. I’d never seen powershell script taking that long time for any large tasks before. So, I decided to try some other alternatives and benchmark the output. I hope this will be beneficial to you as well.

To Benchmark this process, I took smaller file with 2405 MB File size and 29.33 Million lines. The test I performed on is Dell Latitude E7450 with i7-5600 2.6 GHz CPU, 16 GB Ram and Solid-state drive. Then, I’m trying to take First 1 Million lines from this text file and write to newer one.

Execution Time: 6 Minute(s) 41 Second(s) 479 Milliseconds.

Not quiet impressive right?

Let’s try another alternative, again through Powershell Script.

Execution Time: 22 Second(s) 445 Millisecond(s)

In the above script, I used .Net Framework’s IO classes through Powershell to read and write files. We can see the second script is 18 times faster than first one.

Why not we try simple C# console application that does all of this and benchmark this.

Thanks a lot to Kali Dai for bringing me the idea of Rara trek although we couldn’t make it together. This was going to be my second trek of year 2072 and I was already excited. Long vacation from regular duty, visiting Rara Lake and walking around Karnali zone- a less developed region, were on my bucket at the same time. First step towards the trekking is to form a group. I asked Mohan, who was always interested on trekking and we became two from one. Manjul was interested too but his leave was not approved. However, I was positive about Manjul joining us. With Manjul, Binay was also joining us and we were to be 4. I talked with my brothers from Jumla, Bhairab Budha (Junior to me during my overseer on Pokhara) and Prabesh Acharya (Junior to me during my B.E. on Cosmos) to collect more knowledge about locality and trekking routes. We decided to start our trekking on 19th March. We had long discussion and took few days to decide on trekking route and transportation.

Day 0 – Shopping and Packing

We had already bought the ticket for first flight of Saturday from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. It was day before trek, but evening shift on office means I had to stay on office till 10:00 p.m. So, I bought Snickers, Pistachio, Oatmeal, Noodles and Chewing gums for trekking before going office. After returning home from Office at 10:30 p.m, I started packing my bags. I almost scratched my cheek while shaving at midnight. It was 12 by the time I finished my preparation.

Day 1 – Kathmandu – Nepalgunj – Surkhet – Patalkhola

Manjul, me and Binay reached airport around 7:15. It was 7:30 when Mohan arrived. It was first flight of Mohan’s life which got 15 minutes delayed, allowing him some more time to get comfortable. We landed Nepalgunj Airport around 9:20. We took Auto-rickshaw from airport to Buspark. We enjoyed the rickshaw ride on hot day with cool air except that my bag’s strap holder was broken. As soon as we got off from rickshaw, we booked micro bus for Surkhet and took lunch nearby Buspark. We couldn’t find replacement for my bag’s strap holder so I made a knot. We travelled from Nepalgunj to Surkhet on FORCE. It was an amazing travel with all of us getting to know each other more.

We reached Surkhet around 2:30 p.m. We asked local for available transport service up to Nangma, Jumla. One easy option for us to reject was, to take private van costing us 32,000. Other option was public bus service. One bus was leaving at 4:30 p.m. on same day but seats were not available and another on 6 a.m. next day. We asked Bus driver and staff to check if they could manage 4 seats for us. They interchanged other seats and provided us tickets for B 1,2,3,4. A huge thanks to them. After purchasing ticket for Nangma, we had some *Samosa, Selroti and Chop. *Mohan and I bought Beer for us and started our journey with Tuborg. Cheers ! ! ! After 3 hours of travel on narrow road, with some fear and on loud music, we reached Patalkhola on Dailekh district. We came to know that, because of the narrow and tough road, bus are not allowed to travel at night time. So, our first day’s travel was going to end on Patalkhola. Lunch and dinner were getting tastier as we were travelling up. We walked on moon light on road until we scared ourselves by talking about Tiger and Bear we could encounter while trekking. After returning, we slept on room which was available for free with dinner. On first day, we had travelled 4 districts, Kathmandu, Banke, Surkhet and Dailekh.

Day 2 – Patalkhola – Nangma – Manma – Gothijyula

We woke up at 4:30 and completed our daily routines. We left Patalkhola around 5:15 a.m. and continued our travel on same Bus on Karnali Highway. On the way, we had Samosa, Pakoda and Fish from Karnali. Mohan and I had lunch on Dailekh, while Manjul and Binay decided not to have. We were travelling on one side of Karnali river and other side was Achham district. I decided to enjoy the scene and went on to replace *Khalasi * for 2 hours.

Karnali River

Soon, we crossed Dailekh and road touched Kalikot district. Start of the Kalikot means start of the dangerous road! Looking at the road and surrounding, we reached Manma Bazar, headquarter of Kalikot district around 1 p.m. Our bus stopped at Manma for some minutes, held by one passenger who went to bank to deposit money for his brother. We called our home and informed we safely reached Manma. The road ahead from Manma bazar was looking scarier. We talked with bus owner how the road ahead was. He told us that it’ll be like helicopter view if we look outside from Bus. Mohan exchanged side with me to avoid the scary scene seen from his side. The view there was really scary because of the height and curves. Manjul and I checked on every turning hoping scary road to end soon. But we were seeing the similar road for long distance. Asked bus owner, how long the scary road was, he answered 3 hours. Then, Manjul exchanged the seats with Binay. Binay and I were on Driver’s side and Mohan and Manjul on Conductor’s side. The scariest of all is when driver speed up Bus on such breathtaking road. Having traveled many mountain districts and many roads, this road from Manma to Bali was 100 times stunning and breathtaking. Hearing the briefing of various accidents occurred on same highway, we reached Nangma Bazar, Jumla. Our original plan was to stay on Nangma and start trekking next day. But, locals suggested us to take bus up to Gothijyula. That means, our original plan started changing. We called Narendra dai on Gothijyula, whose contact number was provided to me by Prabesh, and asked him to arrange hotel and dinner for us. We reached Gothijyula around 8:30 p.m. Warmed our hands and body on woodfire. We asked best route to walk through with Narendra Dai. We took dinner there around 9:00 p.m. Our wish of recharging our electronic gadgets was not fulfilled as hotel only had solar power and charge was almost gone. Before going to bed on wooden house, we all agreed to wake up early and start trekking tomorrow.

Day 3 – Gothijyula – LumKandh – Chuchumara Lek – Murmu Rara

Photo coming back soon

3rd day of our trip was our 1st day of trekking. Our initial plan was to walk from Nangma to Gothijyula on this day, but now we were going to hike from Gothijyula instead, so we were 1 day ahead of the initial plan. We wanted to start trek at 6 a.m. but it was 6:40 by the time last man, Mohan woke up. We divided Snickers and noodles that I was carrying. After taking organic tea at hotel, it was 8:15. Locals said that they usually reach Rara on 5 hours and assumed us to reach Rara on the same day as well even we started late. First hour of the trek was easier one. Side by the brook, straight way, and we all agreed on taking 10 minutes break every other hour. After 45 minutes of walk, we were introduced with straight and upward trek. We started searching local trekking pole. On the way, Mohan asked one sister if he could take the stick from her home, she responded on local ancient “Leeu“. And, Mohan was twaaa. We understood her response after some time and told Mohan that he can take that. Later on, Manjul talked with her and she brought one of the finest trekking pole from home and gave it to Manjul.

📷
Photo coming back soon

We then started vertical walk which would go up to Lum Kandh Lek. I knew, our plan of 10 minutes break on hour of walk was not going to work. I think we took 5 minutes break on every 5 minutes of walk somewhere. To lengthen the walk, Manjul forgot his sleeping bag on one of the stop. Thank God, it was just 10 minutes far. Sooner, Binay’s water bottle could not resist against gravity and was dropped around 100 meter below on the trekking route whose alignment we assumed to be almost 90 degree. There were no footsteps and no trekking route on that mountain, four of us walked on four different ways. Mohan was walking from other side of the mountain. When we almost climbed the mountain, we saw that there was walkable route nearby us which we missed before climbing the mountain. Thank God that none of us fell down.

It was 1:30 by the time we reached Lum Kandh Lek. I called Narendra dai from Lum Kandh Lek and ensured that we were on right place. However, none of us were sure on which way to take from there. Somewhere very far from Lumkandh, we saw herd grazing together. Because it was very far, we couldn’t ensure if there were shepherd too. Assuming that we’ll meet some shepherd there, we decided that I will walk little ahead, meet someone there and asked the way from there. The main trekking route form lumkandh was entirely covered by snow and we made our own footpath on jungle. When I reached closer to the flocks, I shouted loudly and asked if there is someone around. I heard response from a man who was asking me to come where his sheep were grazing. I took rest there for some time waiting Mohan, Binay and Manjul. When I saw Mohan and Binay after few minutes, they were calling Manjul’s name. I thought all three were coming together. They kept on calling out Manjul. There was no response from Manjul. Not at all. Our first guess was he might have caught stomach problem and is on the way. Manjul rarely gets angry. But when he is angry, he is terrible. So, I thought he was angry with us for not waiting him and he stayed somewhere on the trail. Since there was no response from Manjul for a long time, we decided that Binay and I will go back to search and Mohan will stay there to look after our bags. We were afraid he might had altitude sickness or slipped down. We kept on calling him out and looked at the ground with the fear he might have slipped. It was relief when Manjul responded after couple of minutes. He was returning to us. Our guess was right, he had slipped to the snow and wet. Thank God, he was not severely injured. He had some pain on his body which restricted him from walking on our pace later on. We all talked with shepherd that I called out earlier and asked for the detail path up to Rara Lake from that point. It really was a big relief for us to meet him there. We shared some Shivabuti that we had with him and gave him some money for helping us. There was an hour of trail which was easier. Then, we should climb another mountain called Chuchumare lek. There are no hotels, home or any shelter on the route that we chose. So, we were eating only Snickers and Noodles. Our water bottles were already empty and we had very less energy left with us. Binay and I were walking some distance ahead of Mohan and Manjul. Binay and my plan was to have camping at Chuchumare top. We were planning to melt snow and cook noodles on that and spend the night on Chuchumare top. We were already eating snow to quench our thirst. Our wish was to see some snow on the path with clear weather. God gave us more than what we asked him. We had a perfect sunny day, and snow everywhere. When we reached top of Chuchumare lek, it was 5:15. It was 5:45 by the time Manjul reached there. The wind at the top was unbearable. All you could see around was snow. We took some warm clothes, put gloves on and decided to walk up to Majighatta as it was not favorable for us to camp there.

📷
Photo coming back soon

There was so much of snow around us and entire trekking path was covered by snow of around 1 meter thick. We had very less energy left with us and nobody thought about playing with snow. We just kept on walking over the thick layer of snow and captured some snaps there. It was dark by the time we started walking downhill from Chuchumare top to Majighatta on snow trail inside Jungle. Thank that it was a day before full moon. I’d taken contact number of Army person on Rara National park. I called him and asked how long would it take for us to reach Majighatta, village near by Rara lake. His response was 2 hours. I thought we’d take 4 hours at least with heavy bags, low visibility, and tired body and without rice from last 24 hours. Manjul was good on walking downhill. So, Manjul and I walked ahead with brighter light with the responsibility of identifying the trail. Many times, we thanked Mother Nature for that snow on our trail as footsteps on snow helped us decide the path. No noise, no-one around, no lights around, no sign of living around, we just kept on walking on jungle on night. I beg pardon to Mohan for not taking enough rest on this trail. I think his leg was cramped. I am sorry Mohan. After an hours of walk, we reached an area where there were very few trees. As soon as we thought we completed jungle and are close to the village, trail lead us to another jungle. We just kept on walking on night. We were giving rating to each trekking day. When asked what would be the rating for this day, everyone said it would depend on whether we’ll get some rice or not. There was no doubt for all the rating to be 10/10 if we’d get a chance for dinner. Binay was on 9.5 I believe. We all became happy when we heard a dog barking from long distance. I had never valued a dog barking like this in my entire life. Many times this happened: something that looked like rooftop from distance was just a snow when we reached close. After many such confusion with snow layer, we saw some light around 9:00 P.M from a hut. I went there and talked with people there. They said that we were close to hotel. What a happiness, what a relief! We walked sometime and saw small cottages. Again, asking guys to rest on the way, I rushed to check if there was anyone. Knocked all the doors, shouted “Dai”, “Didi”. As there was no response from two of the houses there, we were upset again. As soon as we decided to move ahead, I heard a female voice coming. I asked her if she could cook for us. Though she’d already slept, she agreed to cook for us. We all sat around fire stove when our food was being prepared. Dinner was yummy. Mohan and I had 3 plates of rice. We were not in the mood of camping on this day either because of tiredness. She showed us a room nearby the kitchen which also had a charging box! One of the happiness on trekking is to get a chance to charge your gadgets. I put my mobile and Camera on charge. I massaged my body with Ajwain oil. Just like other days, plan for tomorrow was to wake up early. This was one of the best day of the trekking where we had so many hell of experience.

Day 4 – Murmu Rara – Rara – Rara

Beautiful Rara

One thing I learned on this trek is, waking up others is really a tough job. Throughout the trek, I always woke up first. Manjul and Binay were ahead of 4th placed die-hard Arsenal fan Mohan :). After we woke up, we took double cup of herbal tea each. Best thing about Karnali is herbal tea. It is tastier than herbal tea we take on cities. At 8:00 a.m., we started chasing Rara. After walking for half an hour, we reached where were destined to. Having visited Phewa Lake and Begnas Lake many times, I thought Rara is also like them but bigger one. But, no, Rara is completely different! What a beauty! What a place! I was completely amazed and speechless. As soon as we reached closer to the lake, we put our bag aside, rushed to touch the purest Rara. We then took snaps, videos and enjoyed the beauty of beautiful Rara. There is a walking path around Rake to reach up to Danphe hotel, only hotel closer to the lake. We were in no mood of going far from Rara, so we walked along shoreline for 15 more minutes. As soon as we reached hotel, we ordered 4 lunch sets. Some of the seniors visiting from Kathmandu suggested us to take boat before lunch. Normally boating is allowed in 9-12 on morning in Rara. After 12, waves on Rara are strong and it can be risky to boat. Officer on National park wrote letter to Nepal Army requesting them to provide boating service to us. There is only one boat that Nepal Army row and take you for 10 minutes trip on Rara for free of service. After boating, we returned to hotel for lunch. We decided to setup tent as it might be late and dark when we return after taking full round of Rara. So, we started setting up tent. Binay engineered tent setup and we worked on. As soon as, tent was setup, I entered inside the tent. I still remember that view from tent’s side wall towards beautiful Rara. I wish my house was right there where we setup tent. I bet you’ll wish the same. Waking up with Rara and sleeping with Rara. Just imagine! While I was lost on imagination, I heard someone talking with us outside. He was the same person that we wondered couple of minutes ago. We were wondering because he was around fifty and in simple dress but was carrying Canon 70D. He introduced himself as journalist of Nepal Television and was asking if anyone of us can talk bit about Rara. I was inside tent, Mohan, Manjul and Binay were suggesting each other’s names before they suggested my name. I agreed and came out of the tent. I didn’t really believe he was NTV journalist.

Speaking for NTV News

He asked me to hold dummy NTV mic and told that, everything will be managed from his 70D. Though I didn’t really believe it will be broadcasted on NTV, I explained something about Rara. I don’t know what I spoke. At last, he told that footage shall be broadcasted on following day’s NTV news.

After setting up tent, we planned to take a round visit of Rara after a short rest. It was a Sunny day and we were feeling lazy to start walking, although our inner desire was to view RARA from every angle. We ordered Tea and discussed about taking porter on return trek. While everyone else agreed, I really didn’t like this idea. I thought, it might not feel like real trekking without trekking bag on back. Anyway, I agreed on hiring porter. I asked if we can stay one more day on Rara. Manjul and Binay agreed while Mohan didn’t. I tried to convince Mohan but couldn’t. Then, we started walking shoreline around Rara. We were mesmerized on every steps, on every single scene we see of Rara. After walking for half an hour, I felt like walking on beach of some ocean. There were waves from Rara and I liked how they touched me and returned back to Rara! We played with waves for a while. Everyone took snaps and video. Later, we decided not to walk from shoreline but walk faster on regular path if we were to complete the round around Rara. On every step, you want to stay there and watch Rara, but, we kept on walking on as our target to complete one round to Rara (around 16k.m.) on same day. There was snow on many places of the walking trail. At one place, Mohan and I had a racing competition over snow without slipper/shoes, which I easily won. Because it was sunny while we started, all of us were on half pants and T-shirt. After 3, we started regretting on coming on half pants and T-shirts. As we kept on walking, Strong and cold wind was hitting us. Rara is bigger than what you just see with your eyes. You realize it only when you walk around. An area of lake that appears 5 minutes to you take 15 to 20 minutes to reach there. Regardless of wind and cold weather, we kept on walking looking at the beautiful Rara. We finally completed round of Rara around 6:30 p.m. It took us more than 5 hour to round Rara walking on faster pace. After having one full round of Rara, only thing I have to say is, Rara is beautiful from every angle. You’d love every step you walk around Rara.

Beauty of Rara

We were happy walkers when we reached hotel around 7:00 p.m. There were new guests who arrived from Kathmandu on hotel with whom we shared some information on trekking route. We listened to classical Nepali and Hindi songs from my playlist enjoying full moon and beautiful Rara. Mohan couldn’t enjoy this one as much as we did. I wished, CDMA phone was off so that Mohan would also be with us there all the time. We had dinner around 9:00 p.m. We had planned to taste local apple wine but because Mohan and I were already knocked out with something stronger, we decided not to take that one. It was an awesome evening; Rara, full moon, clear sky, classical songs, good friends, Manjul singing songs for us and we somewhat *jhyap. *We had everything that we wished on this day.

Day 5 – Rara – Jhyari Lek – Ghuchchhi Lek – Bhulbhule – Chautha

My First stay under tent and sleep inside sleeping bag was a nice experience. Rara on side by tent was making it more awesome. As soon as we woke up, we looked at Rara and started walking around Rara again. We were waiting to see sunrise on Rara Lake. Every moment of day and night, Rara is different, beautiful and gives peace and relaxation to your mind. After watching Rara’s beauty and capturing some sunshine on Rara, we returned back to hotel. Porters we hired were promised to be on hotel by 6:30 a.m. But, they were not there until it was 8:00. At one time, we had thought on our mind that we’ll have to carry our bag, tent and sleeping bag once again. Hotel staff was going towards village, we asked him to send our porters to hotel or find new one. When he was leaving, two men were coming towards us, they were our porters there. Everyone happy, including me. We needed to bargain with our porters for the money that was agreed yesterday. They even refused to go at one moment. We needed them and we hiked the payment that was agreed upon. Our planned time of walking earlier on the day changed and we decided to take lunch there. It was 10:30 by the time we left hotel. Walking on side of Rara, we were bidding farewell to Rara.

Rara was looking even more beautiful than we saw her over last 24 hours and all we could do is just mesmerize. As we were walking towards our destination, we were slowly leaving Rara. We were deeply attached with the beauty and calmness of Rara in 24 hours. We all started singing many songs like we were getting departed with the loved one. After walking 1 hour around Rara, it was time to finally bid farewell to Rara. We all promised to come back again and stay more time with Rara. We increased our pace and kept on walking looking at the mountain and forests. Mohan was scared by Dog where Mohan’s response was, “Oh! Wait! It’s not me you are targeting!” Porters were way ahead of us and we were following them. We were taking less rest and were walking on pace than Day 3. It is straight upward from Jhyari Pina village to Ghuchchhi Lek on a dense pine jungle. It was 4:30 when we reached top of Ghuchchhi. We were told that Chautha is not so far from there. We started walking downward from Ghuchchi. Nearby Ghuchchhi is Bhulbhule where there is Army camp. Army inquired us and then provided us water to drink.

Jumla-Gamgadhi Road at BhulBhule

After walking two more hours from Bhulbhule, we reached Chautha around 7:30 p.m. Chautha is a small village consisting of 10-12 houselholds. Chautha has its own hydropower which also supplies electricity to nearby villages. Porters and I were 15 minutes ahead of other guys. We walked faster so that guys behind us also could walk faster. At one home cum hotel, we asked if they would provide us shelter. They were cooking nettle (sisno) for dinner. We put our bags on room, became fresh and plugged our devices on charge. We went down to the kitchen to get warm from wood fire. GOSH! there was television there with DishHome. Manjul quickly searched for sports channel if there were any game of our interest were being telecasted. Santosh, son of that house told, ‘*Suddo le sports channel sab faank pardiyo’. *He was angry with his dad for removing sports channel and only recharging cable for home package.

We were feeling like watching TV after years. We read the scrolling news on all the channel. After reading scrolling news, we started watching Nepal Television. Sooner after we started watching NTV, GOSH! There was reporting of Rara Lake. Camera man had captured us while we were setting up tent, while we were carrying our bags and all. And, ultimately my interview about Rara lake as well. I don’t really know what I spoke about Rara. I was actually excited to see myself on NTV. Everyone agreed that carrying tent and sleeping bag was worthwhile after that coverage on NTV 8:00 P.M. news. We were told that, Kabiraj Karki, that old man who captured our moments was one of the powerful journalist around Mugu and Karnali. We didn’t believe yesterday that he was really sending that footage to NTV and today, we were seeing ourselves on NTV. Anyway, this was really exciting.

The night on Chautha was getting really good and entertaining. Santosh was talking more and more. He likes to call himself ‘Bale’ of NTV’s popular comedy serial ‘Bhadragol’. Santosh is really a funny guy and clever one as well. He brought a fruit that we’d never seen and asked us to guess its name. It looked like taro (पिंडालु), it often looked like potato, and sometimes like sweet potato. Dinner on Chautha was one of the best food we had on our Rara trek. There were more varieties as well. Santosh gave that potato like fruit too. It was really tasty, we all asked to give us some more. Later we knew that its name was ‘Ground Apple’. On Chautha dinner, we got a chance to taste two new things on our life, nettle and ground apple. Santosh’s talk continued even after dinner, we kept on listening to him. Another awesome day on trekking and we went to bed.

Day 6 – Chautha – Neurighat – Khali – Danphe Lagna – Chyare – Khalanga

I woke up at 5:30, went bathroom and then woke up Manjul and Binay. I warned them to keep singing on while on restroom as there was no lock from inside in restroom. We paid our bill which was 1,210, bought 3 kg of Ground apple to take home and started walking at 6:30 without even having a tea. Our target was to have tea and breakfast at Neurighat. We reached Neurighat at 9:00 a.m. We ordered tea and cookies there. Our porters only had single cup of tea. Binay had two cup. Manjul, Mohan and I had 11 cup of tea together. The Danphe Lagna height, our walk from Neurighat was the most awaited and most talked walk of the Rara trek by locals. We didn’t find this as difficult and as hard as Chuchumare Lek, maybe because we were not carrying our bags. We reached Danphe Lagna top around mid-day. Most of the walking road was covered by snow and water that was just starting to melt from snow. We took another cheaper and tasty lunch at Danphe Lagna. For 6 of us, it cost us only around 700! I really did not like the rate charged by people on Karnali. It is too less than what they should be charging. I think, they must be develop some business skills in order to improve their living standard. Karnali is not developed as compared to other hilly region of Nepal and people here must work hard to earn their living. After lunch and rest at Danphe lagna, we started walking again. We were now chasing Khalanga. After half an hour of walk, we saw an amazing view of Khalanga valley. Khalanga was too far from us but it was looking awesome. Binay actually liked it as much as he liked Rara. We were on top of the mountain and we had to reach Khalanga bazar through Chyare. Chyare is very big ground on the way from Danphe Lagna to Khalanga. Main attraction of this top of Chyare, especially for those who are returning from Rara is, there is mobile network! Everyone including me got engaged on phone for long time calling near and dear ones. My biggest fear before the trek was my ankle injury which I had got during futsal game. Thankfully, that didn’t reoccur. But, yes during walk from Chyare to Khalanga, I had my ankle twisted 3 times.

Before Sunset, we reached Jumla Khalanga, also known as Chandan Nath. Khalanga was bigger and more developed than what I had imagined. I think, Jumla is as much or more developed than Parbat district, where I was raised. Jumla khalanga is bigger and developed than Kushma, headquarter of Parbat district. When we reached Khalanga, we booked air-ticket for next day’s flight to Nepalgunj. They said flight time is not fixed from Jumla to Nepalgunjg as it depends on weather of other Karnali district and Jumla itself. There is a single plane and its flight turn of Jumla-Nepalgunj comes only after Nepalgunj-Humla, Nepalgunj-Dolpa and Nepalgunj-Mugu flights. After recent plane crashes, single engine plane were banned and there were only two choice from Jumla to Nepalgung; Tara Air and Nepal Airlines. Only Tara Air provides daily flight to Nepalgunj from Jumla. After booking ticket, Mohan confirmed Shrestha Hotel near by airport, which was suggested by his friends on Pulchowk. Our porters also stayed with us there and were returning tomorrow morning to their home. At hotel, all of us took first bath of the trek. We had last chance of testing local apple brandy wine and asked if hotel had one. Because it has 41% alcohol, it wasn’t wine and we decided not to drink. All of our remaining foods were divided and we packed the bag.

Day 7 – Khalanga – Nepalgunj – Kathmandu

We all woke up in no hurry this day. Around 8, we left hotel to visit Khalanga bazar. Last night’s dinner on hotel wasn’t good one so, we decided to have lunch on other restaurant. We visited Chandan Nath Temple and Bhairab Nath Temple at first. Then, we searched hotel for lunch. We ordered 3 lunch for us and sat for breakfast on hotel nearby Chandan Nath mandir. At first, we ordered a plate of *Aalu Chop *and tea for us. Aalu chop was really tasty and I think, we ordered 4 more times. After breakfast, we went for lunch. It was somewhat better than yesterday’s dinner. Manjul had fruit platter.

After lunch, we returned to hotel room and waited for plane. After a long wait, finally we saw plane coming to Khalanga airport around 2 p.m. It wasn’t hard for us to guess that this was the plane we’ll return to Nepalgunj. After 10 minutes of plane’s landing, check-in started and we got into the plane. Plane’s seat were not so comfortable. Manjul had grabbed a first seat behind one pilot. I got seat behind another pilot. Manjul and I were wondering looking at all those control box. Pilots started the plane, we tried to observe every activities our pilot was doing. I remembered god as soon as plane left the ground. As plane was taking height, our heartbeat was taking height too. Probably airhostess noticed that Manjul and I were looking at cockpit, she closed the curtain behind the pilot. I never imagined to see cockpit view from so close. Our heartbeat was stopped for a while when the visibility was none outside the plane. I was afraid when I saw pilot reading Himalayan Time’s TGIF edition on such a less visibility. After 35 minutes of adventures flight, which was like a mountain flight, we safely landed to Nepalgunj airport. We took the autorickshaw from airport to Buspark. When we saw Bus that we had booked from phone, we wanted to cancel that. We were surrounded by so many bus staffs that kept us on confusion and dilemma on choosing right bus to Kathmandu. After long talk and bargain, we decided to return on Sundar A/C Bus. Our Bus was leaving at 6:00 p.m. and we had 2 hours until then. We wanted to have some Mo:Mo and Chowmien, so we went to Hotel Siddhartha on rickshaw. We had Mo:Mo and various delicious foods there. We waited our bus outside Siddhartha hotel. Within 10 minutes, our bus arrived and we got into bus. Seats were comfortable and we enjoyed the return trip to Kathmandu.

Day 8 – Kathmandu

Rest, Rest and more Rest.

At last, it is not possible to describe the beauty of Rara on words or Photo. I suggest you to visit Rara at least once in your life. The trekking route we chose was the most difficult one and there are many easier way to reach Rara. We chose to follow the difficult one, you shouldn’t. Rara national park has allocated area for camping if you want. Danphe hotel is capable of handling enough guests so you shouldn’t really worry about carrying your own tent and sleeping bags. In case hotel is pack, there are enough homestay and hotels just 20 minutes away from Rara at Murmurara and Majighatta. I’ll write all the possible routes that lead up to Rara on my next blog. Once is not enough, I will again visit Rara with my family.

Creating Memory-Optimized Database And Table

Hello All,

I hope you read my previous blog In-Memory OLTP . This is my second blog in In-Memory OLTP Series. As of now, you should have known what Sql Server In-Memory OLTP is. Giving you a quick recap, this new feature of Sql Server allows you to store your data entirely in memory giving you up to 100 times performance benefit. In real time, you can expect up to 40 times performance improvement. The coolest of all is your application doesn’t require any changes if you have your table in memory.

In this blog, I will specially focus on how do we create memory-optimized table. You will use same T-SQL code that you are using till date to create table except few addition. To fit your table in memory, you should have memory-optimized database. You can create new database as memory-optimized or you can change existing database to contain memory-optimized file group. You can store both memory-optimized and disk-based tables in memory-optimized database.

The process below is same for existing database and for new databases as well.

*T-SQL:*
After you have executed Create Database statement, issue the following command :

ALTER DATABASE IMOLTP ADD filegroup IMOLTP_MOD2 CONTAINS MEMORY_OPTIMIZED_DATA

ALTER DATABASE IMOLTP ADD FILE (
NAME = 'imoltp_mod2'
,filename = 'D:\Data\imoltp_mod2'
) TO filegroup imoltp_mod2
GO

Don’t forget to replace ‘IMOLTP’ by your database name. Also, make sure that the path provided in file name exists. In this case, D:\Data should already exist. What we are doing here is simply adding Memory Optimized File group to our database. This file group is needed for Memory Optimized tables.

SSMS:

Another way to add Memory-Optimized File group to your table is to go through Sql Server Management Studio. Here are the steps:

If you are migrating existing database, Select database and click on properties and go to Filegroups tab. If you are creating new database then also go to Filegroups tab.

There is section called Memory Optimized Data there. Add your memory optimized file group name and it’s done.

📷
Photo coming back soon

Memory Optimized FileGroup

Now, we have database with memory optimized Filegroup so we can add memory-optimized table in this database.

Below is the query to create memory-optimized table in your database.

CREATE TABLE [ShoppingCart] (
[ShoppingCartId] BIGINT NOT NULL
PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED HASH WITH (BUCKET_COUNT = 2000000)
,[UserId] INT NOT NULL

This query should look familiar to you but, there are lots of things to note on this create statement.

Option MEMORY_OPTIMIZED=ON is compulsory for the table to be Memory Optimized Table. DURABILITY=SCHEMA_AND_DATA is optional. If you don’t provide, durability will be SCHEMA_AND_DATA. This means, your data is not lost with power loss or Serer shutdown. I will discuss in detail about this on upcoming blog. Another option is SCHEMA_ONLY. In this option, your data is in memory only till your server is up. Server goes off, you lose data.

Another thing you need to understand is HASH WITH (BUCKET_COUNT = 2000000). This is hash index we are creating in in-memory OLTP. What is that number 2 with few zeros? This is the way you create hash index in in-memory tables. The Number BUCKET_COUNT should always be 1-2 times of number of unique rows a column can have. Over sizing is okay.

Now, you have created memory optimized database and table. Now we will create natively-compiled stored procedure. I won’t explain lot about natively compiled stored procedure in this blog as this piece of text is getting longer and i am afraid you won’t read anything of this.

Execute the following code to create natively compiled stored procedure :

IF OBJECT_ID('usp_insertSampleCarts') IS NOT NULL

I planned of learning all about WCF (Windows communication foundation) from last one year and i was never close to manage the time. This time, i think i start and will continue. Throughout the period I am learning it, I will try to write down the basics and my understandings. Hope this will help you if you are also just starting WCF.

Connected System: An application that is distributed across multiple computer nodes with the strong emphasis on communication protocol.

Building connected systems on windows

Back in the day, there was DCOM and COM+. There was a wrapper called Enterprise Services to ship DCOM/COM+. Very component-oriented architecture and very RPC in nature. One of this technology was Distributed transaction. In order to take advantage, it required user to have the DCOM infrastructure available in every node that will take part in that style of communication.

.Net Remoting was introduced wit the release of .Net. It was very similar to DCOM in many ways. It was a solution for Managed code i.e. components will execute completely in managed environment within the .NEt CLR, as a result .Net remoting turned out to be very simple and extensible. But, still depended on .Net CLR.

Unlike DCOM and .Net Remoting, MSMQ is purely focused on Messaging. It allows user to take a message and transfer between two nodes in a connected system in an asynchronous, durable, reliable methods. It still requires MSMQ infrastructure on every machine that participate on communication.

Each framework comes with a unique programming model and each of these framework restricts user to windows only.

The move towards “services”

Demand for technology freedom and interoperability is common now and this is accomplished with the use of Services. Services expose units of functionality via messaging. The way to achieve interoperability is to use standard protocols and message formats.

*Get Dos Path for Folders*
This is useful when you need to work on Dos environment and work with long directory. To get the dos name of the long folder use dir /x command on dos. For example to get DOS name of the “C:\long folder name\more longer folder name”. from dos use the command dir “C:\long folder name” /x

In my next few blogs, I would attempt to explain you about SQL Server’s In-Memory OLTP (Hekaton). Let me know how am I doing with it by giving your valuable comments. In-Memory OLTP is the new feature introduced with the latest version of Sql Server i.e SQL Server 2014.

What is In-Memory Computing?

Kirill Sheynkman describes In-Memory Computing as “In-Memory Computing is based on a memory-first principle utilizing high-performance, integrated, distributed main memory systems to compute and transact on large-scale data sets in real-time – orders of magnitude faster than traditional disk-based systems.”

Memory-first principle refers to an optimizations one can take advantage of when data is stored mainly in RAM (Yes in Ram, Not in disks).

What is In-Memory OLTP?

You may have imagined what is In-Memory OLTP after knowing what is In-Memory computing. You are right, In-Memory OLTP is the data processing technique that works with the data stored in memory of the server. In-Memory OLTP is a new feature introduced in Sql Server 2014 that stores, retrieves and performs query with data in memory.

Why data are stored in Memory? What is the Cost? What happens when Server shuts down?

Not only RAM is ~1000 times faster than physical mediums, it completely eliminates the traditional overhead of block-level devices including marshaling, paging, buffering, memory-mapping, possible networking, OS I/O, and I/O controller. So, when data is stored in memory, all the time spent on Lock, paging, I/O is saved allowing you to perform your transactions faster and without locks.

There were the days when computer memory was too expensive and was available in smaller size only. Now, RAM costs less than $10 for GB and we have up to 12TB of Ram as of writing this blog. Now, what happens when the server goes off? Obviously you know, When the server is shut down, everything stored in RAM is flushed. And what about data? When Server is up again, your data is back on Memory. SQL Server uses Data and Delta files in Memory Filegroup and regular log files to store information about your data so that in case of server shutdown or any other failure, data is reloaded into memory. Always remember one thing, data is always stored in Memory and Logging is always done on disk.

How to install In-Memory OLTP?

In-Memory OLTP is available only with 64 bit of Sql Server 2014. Also, it is only available for Enterprise Edition. You should select In-Memory OLTP feature during an installation of SQL Server 2014.

In my Next article, I will post on creating Memory Optimized database and tables.

WCF Services

Service design Philosophies are :

SOAP : It relies on XML Information Set for its message format, and usually relies on other Application Layer protocols, most notably Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), for message negotiation and transmission. It is transfer neutral Commonly used in a scenario where you have a more controlled environment.

REST: REST don’t attempt to achieve transport neutrality but, RESTful services typically embrace HTTP, the “Web” transport. In REST, services are modeled as an “resources” and they are given an unique identifier (URI). They are communicated via a standard service contract (GET, POST,PUT,DELETE,HEAD). Resources can be represented as XML,RSS,JSON,etc. Commonly used in public facing web-service scenarios.

Converting New Visual Studio Solution File to Previous One

Problem: When we go on web for solution of some problem, and people on internet can provide us with the whole project or solution. Not every developer uses the same version of Visual studio IDE. Situation could be something like that, you are using visual studio 2010 and solution provided on web is on Visual studio 2008. In this scenario, you can easily convert solution in 2008 from 2010. But, actual problem arrises when solution is provided in Visual Studio 2012 and you have Visual Studio 2008 or 2010 on your machine. Visual studio doesn’t support backward compatibility on its solution files. It will give you an error message.

But, this problem can be easily solved with very little effort. Here is what i did to convert visual studio 2012 solution to visual studio 2008 format

1. Open solution file(.sln) file with notepad++ or your favourite text editor(notepad can also open this file).

2. Replace the following first two lines

Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 12.00
# Visual Studio 2012

by,

Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 10.00
# Visual Studio 2008

3. Save the edited file and now you can simply open visual studio 2012 solution in visual studio 2008.

4. If you need to convert from Visual Studio 2012 to Visual studio 2010, you can simply replace by the following:

Microsoft Visual Studio Solution File, Format Version 11.00
# Visual Studio 2010

Note: Csharp projects (.csproj) and VB Projects (.vbproj) are backward compatible already and can be opened by any version of visual studio.
